My SIL told me recently that a relative of hers had recently had an abortion. Although this couple had been trying for years to conceive (and I think had to resort to some medical/artificial means to do it), and although they had wanted a boy, which is what the baby was, a prenatal test indicated that the baby had spina bifida, so they killed him. I'm not sure of the accuracy of the test -- I know that all tests can have false positives and false negatives; but I do know that there is a big range in disability with spina bifida -- a childhood friend of mine had it, and I never knew it until I was much older. The only thing different about him (which I didn't even know as a child), is that he cannot control his bowels, but he can control his bladder. So sad that these children are being exterminated -- and I'm pretty sure that the March of Dimes is promoting this extermination, which saddens me. I thought we'd gotten better than we were in the 50s. Back then, disabled children were put into homes and forgotten by their families; today, they're just murdered before they're even born. So sad.
